Getting Started
How do I get started with tutoring?
Request a free consultation online, or call or text (408) 766-2399. We'll talk for 20 or 30 minutes by phone or video about what your student is working on and whether I'm the right fit.
What ages and grades do you serve?
Kindergarten through 12th grade. Guitar lessons are open to adults too, and CalTPA coaching is for teacher candidates.
Do you require a long-term commitment?
No. You pay as you go. If you'd rather pay several weeks ahead, I can offer a lower rate.
Programs & Services
What subjects do you tutor?
Reading and phonics, writing and grammar, math, science, social studies, and homework help. Also test preparation, study skills, and executive function coaching.
What's the difference between one-on-one and small group sessions?
Sessions are an hour. One-on-one is one student and me. A small group is two to five students with similar goals, often siblings or friends, and each family pays less. Guitar lessons and combined sessions get worked out in the consultation.
Do you work with students who have learning differences?
Yes, including students with ADHD, dyslexia, or an IEP or 504 plan. Send me what you have before the first session and I'll read it. There's more on the Specialized Support page.
Scheduling & Sessions
How often should my child have tutoring sessions?
Weekly works best. Every other week tends to lose momentum unless the student practices a lot on their own. Before a big test, twice a week can make sense.
What's your cancellation policy?
Please give me 24 hours' notice, and we'll reschedule at no charge. Cancellations with less notice, and no-shows, are charged in full. Emergencies happen, and I handle those case by case.
Do you offer summer programs?
Yes. Sessions continue through the summer, for getting ahead or catching up before fall.
What are your hours of operation?
Monday through Friday, 3:00 to 7:00 PM, and Saturday, 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Online sessions outside those hours are sometimes possible, so ask.
Pricing & Payment
How much does tutoring cost?
It depends on the format: one-on-one or a small group, and how often. Small groups cost less per student. I'll give you the rate in the free consultation, and if it's a stretch, tell me. I'd rather adjust the plan than have it become stressful.
Do you offer financial assistance?
Yes. I offer sliding-scale rates and payment plans. Just ask; it stays between us.
What payment methods do you accept?
Cash, Venmo, or Zelle. You can pay per session or monthly, whichever works for your family.
Online Learning
How do online tutoring sessions work?
On Zoom, with a shared whiteboard and screen sharing. The student can show me their work, and we work problems on the same whiteboard. I'll help with setup before the first session.
What technology do we need for online tutoring?
A computer or tablet with a camera and microphone, and a reliable connection. A phone screen is too small for most work. We can do a quick test call before the first session.
Are online sessions as effective as in-person?
For most students, yes. Some younger students do better in person, and I'll tell you if I think yours is one of them.
Progress & Results
How do you track my child's progress?
I keep notes on every session and send you updates on what we worked on and what comes next. If you want a bigger-picture conversation, ask anytime.
How quickly will we see results?
It depends on where your student starts. Some changes show up in the first few weeks, like explaining a step or starting homework without a fight. Grades usually take longer.
Do you communicate with my child's teacher?
With your permission, yes. A short email thread with the teacher keeps tutoring in step with the class.
What if my child isn't clicking with me?
Tell me. If I'm not the right fit, I'll say so and help you find someone who is.
